Grade 1 Resources for
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Add and subtract within 20.
Balloon Pop Math Addition Level 1: This is a web based game available on the sheppard software website. This tool helps students master simple addition facts as well as compare the sum obtained from each addition by popping the balloons in order starting from the smallest sum to the largest sum. Addition Level 1 can be used to reinforce math facts for students in the lower elementary grades as well as help struggling math students gain fluency.
How Many Under the Shell?: This tech tool helps students practice addition and subtraction. Students can practice counting on and if they are ready to work with subtraction they can choose the subtraction option. This tool helps develop students’ number sense and fluency with addition and subtraction facts to 10. Okta the octopus hides some bubbles under a shell, and then either adds more bubbles or takes some away. Students have to decide how many bubbles are left under the shell. The number of bubbles can be set to a certain number or if the student has mastered their facts they can select random.
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
Cyberchase - Poddle Weigh-In (AA): _This tech tool uses a virtual balance manipulative as a symbolic representation to help students visualise the idea of equivalence. Students need to make the scale balance by finding the correct weight of the character on one side of the scale. On the other side they have number weights valued at 1,2,3, and 4. Students continue to add and remove weights until they balance the scale. The game tells students that the numbers needed to balance the 'poddles' (the characters in the game) are not dependent on their size helping students to focus on balancing the scale rather than on the size of the characters.
Work with addition and subtraction equations.
AGAME Monkey Math Balance: In this game, users are presented with a balance that must be accurately leveled using the numbers available at the bottom of the screen. Students have 120 seconds to progress through each level. After correctly leveling two balances, they are given a mystery prize (extra time, hint, bonus points, etc.). As students pass each level, more numbers are added to the bottom, increasing the difficulty of the game. If a user does not progress to the next level in the given time, the game is over.
IXL Recognize Patterns:_ This tech tools allow kids to practice the concept of pattern in many different ways. It has 100 questions and a timer; it displays the number of answers that are correct out of 100. When an answer is correct it gives rewarding phrases and when a specific number of correct answers is reached it gives rewards to the player.
